
The entire story takes place on the surface of a distant desert planet Gunsmoke, illuminated by only two and surrounded by five moons, settled a little more than a century before by dozens of spacecraft from Earth and Seeds belonging to the project. It is a wild and harsh world, where human colonists struggling to maintain a dignified existence, including the continuing technological regression (The world of Trigun is very similar to the old American West) and the old feuds and powerful rival families. Also blamed for the destruction of July City, two agents of the insurance company Bernardelli are placed on the steps of the humanoid typhoon, hoping to track him down and minimize the damage he caused.
